The Importance of Vitamin D

There’s a great deal of talk about Vitamin D and how much we need and how to get it.  One of the main reasons we don’t get enough Vitamin D is because when we are outside we are covered with sunscreen and wearing sunglasses.  Our skin is our largest pour and covering it with sunscreen, (most of them with harmful toxins in them causing cancer versus preventing it), we block Vitamin D from being absorbed.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble to enhance intestinal absorption of calcium, iron magnesium, phosphate and zinc. Vitamin D3 is the most important compound. Sitting outside for 5-30 minutes a couple days a week without sunglasses, and this includes contacts, as well as no sunscreen you can get a healthy dose of Vitamin D without taking yet another pill. The human body produces Vitamin D in response to ultraviolet rays.

Dr. John Cannell, Director of the nonprofit Vitamin D Council recommends 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily.  Because Vitamin D3 has zero toxicity there is no harm in taking higher amounts.  Avoid soy oil base Vitamin D due to most soy is genetically modified.  Instead, look for rice bran oil Vitamin D which also provides antioxidants. 

A good quality Vitamin D shouldn’t break the bank with a 30 day supply costing around $15.00.

Vitamin D is also manufactured by the body from cholesterol.  No wonder why we are Vitamin D deficient when doctors are prescribing pills to lower cholesterol. D3 helps ensure the body absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for building bones. In addition it can aid to reducing cancer cell growth and controlling infections leading to the flu.

There are numerous studies linking insufficient Vitamin D levels in us with an increased risk of fractures in older adults.  When you are deficient in Vitamin D your muscles strength decreases  leading to the falls, causing fractures. It’s not just fractures that are prevalent  it’s also leading to heart disease because as we know the heart is a muscle. There is also a link to Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis. However, children too are showing signs of being deficient in Vitamin D.

In addition, the Vitamin D in foods is not enough for therapeutic levels to support health needs. This includes organic foods.  There are too many toxins not only in the food but the dirt, air and water to get the Vitamin D we need. There’s the big push for milk, fortified with Vitamin D but it’s D2 not D3 and it’s the D3 we want.  Vitamin D2 is tricky as it is a synthetic compound of Vitamin D.  It is poorly absorbed and less effective.  This is most likely the D vitamin supplement you will find at the pharmacy and big box stores.   This is not a regular vitamin but a steroid hormone that is designed to obtain through sun exposure and not your diet.

So how do you know if you’re Vitamin D deficient?

  • Because the symptoms are so similar people are being misdiagnosed with low levels of Vitamin D as having Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
  • You feel blue because your levels of Serotonin are low.  Serotonin rises with exposure to the sun light and falls as it does in the winter months.
  • Your energy is low and you feel tired. Your bones “ache” pointing back to the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome misdiagnosis. You are overweight or obese.
  • Vitamin D is a fat-soluble hormone like vitamin. It’s as if the body fat acts like a “sink” by collecting it.  Along with feeling sluggish and tired.
  • Then there’s the gut trouble. If you have a gastrointestinal condition that affects your ability to absorb fat you’re not being able to absorb the D.  Chron’s, Celiac and Non-Celiac gluten sensitivity and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Poor levels of Vitamin D will jeopardize your immune system leaving you vulnerable.
  • Let’s not leave out age. If you’re 50 or more, your skin doesn’t make as much vitamin D in response to sun exposure.
  • In addition, kidneys become less efficient at converting the D. If you have a darker skin tone such as African Americans, as much as 10 times more sun exposure is needed to produce an equal amount as a fair skin person.
  • Doctors are now asking Mother’s of newborns if the infant is showing signs of a sweaty head which is another sign of being deficient in Vitamin D. This is also seen in adults but just out of the womb and a baby is deficient in a vitamin that will contribute to it leading a life of health and wellness.

The only way to know for sure if you are Vitamin D deficient is through a blood test. It has been suggested it be done twice a year.  For those living north of the equator once when the sun is strong as in August and then again when it’s dark and gray such as February. There are also Do It Yourself kits for sale  if you choose.
